Fisherman’s Walk anniversary

John Cresswell has a feature in the Daily Echo about Fisherman’s Walk being a hundred years old.

He makes the important point that Fisherman’s Walk existed on its approximate line before 1913 as a route to easy beach access. It would also have been the way used by people living at Stourfield House (now demolished) during the late 18th century.

Highcliffe Castle: Christchurch mayor making

It is significant that Christchurch Council has this month held the installation of its mayor John Lofts at Highcliffe Castle.

This is the first time this has taken place away from Christchurch town centre.

This event marks a recognition of the castle’s importance and value since for a long time its future was uncertain.

The  borough, which embraces Highcliffe, had the foresight to invest in the castle and its heritage in the teeth of great opposition. It has paid off and become part of the community again.

This year at the castle there is an exhibition called  Wish You Were Here: Looking back on Highcliffe holidays.

Barton-on-Sea: Cliff landslide tests begin

Tests on Barton-on-Sea cliffs began today with the drilling of boreholes.

Movement is to be monitored until February 2015 as part of the search for the causes of the cliff falls.

Many cracks along the cliff top have been there for some years but from time to time there have been significant falls both at Naish Farm near Chewton Bunny and next to the main Barton-on-Sea buildings.

The New Forest District Council has received a £300,000 government grant for the investigation.
